Acupuncture for Sciatica & Low Back Pain in Williamsport, PA

Back pain has a way of shrinking your world. The chair you can’t sit in, the shoe you can’t tie, the electric line of pain that shoots down one leg when you stand the wrong way. Sciatica in particular is its own kind of misery, sharp, deep, and hard to ignore. And most people are handed the same short list: rest, painkillers, maybe wait and see.

There is usually more we can do than wait.

What’s really going on

Low back pain and sciatica are not one problem with one cause. Sometimes it’s tight, seized muscle pressing on a nerve. Sometimes it’s an irritated disc, or an old injury that changed how you move and left the whole area guarding. In the medicine I practice, the pain marks a place where flow has stalled and the tissue has stopped moving freely, often made worse by cold, strain, or long hours in one position.

Sciatica is what happens when that stalled, angry area starts involving the nerve that runs down the leg. The leg pain is real, but the source is usually up in the low back and hip, which is exactly where treatment has to reach.

How acupuncture helps

Acupuncture is well suited to this. It releases the deep muscle that’s clamping down, calms the irritated nerve, and brings circulation back to a region that has gone tight and cold. For many people that means less of the sharp leg pain, a back that moves more freely, and a return to the things they’d stopped doing. It’s worth knowing that major medical guidelines, including the American College of Physicians, now list acupuncture among the first things to try for low back pain before stronger measures.

I’ll be straight about expectations. A back that’s been hurting for months usually needs a short series, not a single visit, and how fast it moves depends on what’s driving it. The sharp, nervy pain often settles first.

What makes this approach different

Many places treat the back that hurts. I want to know why it went out and why it hasn’t recovered. That means looking at how you move, where the real strain is coming from, and what’s keeping the area from healing. Treating the leg where it hurts while ignoring the low back that’s driving it is why a lot of sciatica care never quite works.

That is the Reidy Center approach: treat the person, not just the symptom.

What to expect at your first visit

We talk through your history, how and when the pain hits, what makes it better or worse, and what you’ve tried. I assess the whole pattern. Then you receive your first treatment, which most people find deeply relaxing, and you leave with a clear plan. Some pain deserves a proper workup first: if you have sudden severe weakness in a leg, numbness in the saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control, that needs urgent medical care, not a waiting list.

Common questions

Does it hurt? The needles are extremely thin. Most people feel a small pinch at most, then deep relaxation.

How many treatments will I need? It depends on the cause and how long it’s been going on. Many people feel a shift within a few visits, and we set a realistic plan at the first appointment.

Can I do this with physical therapy or my doctor’s care? Yes. Acupuncture works well alongside conventional care.

Is it safe? Acupuncture performed by a licensed, trained practitioner has an excellent safety record. I have more than 20 years of clinical experience.
